5 Tips to Master the Art of Social Media

Cubebrush just welcomed a Social Media Specialist to the team! Hilâl is even bringing her expertise to the blog, giving us 5 tips to master the art of social media. But first, a little bit about our new addition.

Hilâl was born and raised in the Netherlands and is originally an Asian Turk. From an early age her family made sure she was surrounded by all kinds of art from music to fine arts to Martial Arts.

A few years ago. she decided to become a teacher in fine arts- a goal she will soon be completing. Her studies still didn’t provide enough artistic freedom so she started her own art business making crocheted dolls, patterns and realistic miniature pieces of which the dolls have been exhibited in New York a couple of times. In this work she finds freedom, happiness and passion and tries to pass this on to her customers and students!

Education is something she takes very seriously. She loves to teach others and encourage them to be more creative and express themselves.

In her spare time, she enjoys painting digitally, practicing Pencak Silat (martial arts), traveling abroad and playing violin. When nearing deadlines you’ll find her panicking and baking. Her biggest inspiration is nature, Asian culture and philosophy.

She loves the art of social media and growing different platforms. Here she gives us some great tips.

Don't Limit Yourself

Don't limit yourself to one medium. Use as many as you can! Research each medium, because each medium works differently.

Instagram is great for work in progress photos, behind the scenes and finished works.

As we know, Facebook has recently made changes to its algorithm making it harder for pages to get found without paying for advertisements. For this reason you’ll want to join as many art groups as you can and post regularly.

Not all platforms will let you post social media links but some may have 1 group file where you can put your links together with all the other group members. This is a good thing, refer people to that file.

Post Frequently

The internet has become the best place to get your work noticed so post regularly. You should be posting at least 3x a day when you're just starting out. Know that building a following takes time. But keep going. Don’t lose confidence.

Hashtags

When using Instagram it’s important to research hashtags in multiple languages. English is not spoken everywhere so expand your reach! Hashtags will pull people in when they use the search bar on Instagram, Google, Facebook.

Network

Use your connections! Show your art to your friends, family and even talk about it when your doctor asks about your interests. I've started doing this for a few years and you'll be amazed at how many of them will be interested in your art! It’ll give you a boost in confidence and who knows who they’ll tell!

Don’t limit yourself to your immediate circle though. I’ve found gatherings like Comic Con a great place to meet new people, especially artists. Hang around with those artists and ask for their portfolio. They’ll gladly show you their work and ask you for yours. Exchange business cards. Like the artist’s pages and message your favourites.

Stay in touch.

I find this way of networking my favourite. I can be quite shy and bash my own art but when I’m with fellow artists I know they are just like me.

You won’t be selling to those connections you’ve made but they will expand your reach beyond your immediate circle.

Community Forums

Forums offer a great place to keep track of your progress and receive feedback from the community. Make full use of it.

Many times at Cubebrush we share art from the forums on our social media. It's also another great example of networking.

This reminds me of a Comic Con my sister and I went to last year. Our goal was to meet as many artists as we could but this one artist stood out. It was a forum user!

She was selling her art behind a small booth and after we introduced ourselves. We asked if we could see her portfolio and give feedback. She looked quite nervous but happy.

If we remembered her art then there’s a big chance employers searching the forums for future employees will too.

I hope some of my experience will help artists reach their goals more easily.  It’s not easy to make your dreams come true but determination is the key to success!
