Can you tell me a little bit about Gunship Revolution? How did you come to be one of Southeast Asia’s most trusted digital art brands?

We started Gunship Revolution as a kind of alternative to the conventional studio system particularly at a time when connectivity was developing to the point where people can get faster internet at home for cheaper. The guys and I, we all came from very different backgrounds but the stories covered pretty much the same ground: client troubles, compensation troubles, that sort of thing, and we built the company out of the conviction that things can always be changed for the better. We hardly had any real capital on us that first few months: we literally started out from the garage of my parent’s house. Ever since, we’ve been a digital art company focused on finding new and better forms of collaboration between artists, clients, and their audience

Gunship Revolution has put together a team that’s worked together for over a decade. Can you tell us how you all came together?

GR President Emmanuel Javier had been running weekend gatherings for artists since the early Naughts and many of us had been casually involved in that at one point. Around twelve years ago, he transitioned to running a comics magazine and that was where many from our core team began working together in a professional setting. By the time that we started GR, most of us have known and worked with and built trust on each other for years.

How significant has the tight knit team been to your success?

It has been quintessential. We understand how we work and we help bolster each other against our weaknesses and it is a very personal for us, often as a debt of gratitude, to help each other grow as better artists and better human beings.

Having been a tight knit group for so long how do you find the right fit for a new team member?

Very, very carefully. We screen artists not just for their work but also for their attitude and professionalism. Egotism is a perennial problem in the arts, of course (almost to the point of being a price of admission even,) but that is why we put a premium on professional modesty in the face of duty. This applies to us on the Admin, to everyone in our roster, and something we expect no less of from our applicants.

You joined Cubebrush! What are some of the assets you’ll be offering to your followers?

We will be releasing loads of our exclusive custom brushes – the ones we use on our work on video, card and board games, as well as tutorials and asset packs.

What made you decide to join our platform?

Cubebrush is a leading platform for delivering top-notch quality assets and tutorials for digital artists and we do like the idea of being in that industry front row.

Have a favorite project you’ve worked on?

I’d say providing toy designs for Marvel was the most interesting and exciting project for me

Working on any new projects? Care to share some details?

We’re developing our own IP, Balderdash 5 currently which is an Epic Fantasy Visual Novel. We’re also working on Thistleheart, a new comic to be released on Kickstarter, probably by 2019. Both will be written by John Schlim Jr. I’m also working on card games from a number of triple-A companies.

Any advice for ambitious artists out there?

I’d like to recommend studying the old masters. There is so much to learn there. We, the artists who are here right now, are good for inspiration but if you’re a student, study from the ground up. Study art from its origins and move towards the more recent. It will be an invaluable foundation to your creative endeavor. That foundation is everything.

Also, always set out to create a masterpiece, never settle for anything less!
