Mammuthus is an extinct genus of proboscidean mammals in the family Elephantidae commonly known as mammoths. They existed from about 4.8 million years ago to just 3,700 years ago, in the Pliocene (late Neogene), Pleistocene, and Holocene (Quaternary) epochs.12 Numerous species have been described, the best known being the woolly mammoth. all. Mammoth fossils have been found in North America, Eurasia, and Africa. It should not be confused with the genus Mammut, which belongs to a different family (Mammutidae, commonly known as mastodons).
